(Joyous) Anticipation!

(Joyous) Anticipation!

I recently came across this beautiful detail from an illustration (c. 1765) from a Ragamala series – Madhumadhavi Ragini on the Instagram page - @artsofhindostan.

The post on Instagram was titled – ‘The anticipation of love…’

Ahh! Beautiful title!

A second post with another detail from the illustration was titled – ‘The joyous anticipation of love…’

So endearing!

Anticipation by itself has an anxious, nervous connotation to it. But calling it joyous makes it sound exciting. In the fine painting, the protagonist is standing in the palace courtyard, surrounded by tropics and overshadowing grey clouds! The painting represents the joyous anticipation among lovers who are about to be reunited in the monsoon season. Needless to say, I loved it, the painting made me pause, made me ponder and made me nostalgic for monsoons that just passed by.

Imagine if we somehow anticipated everything with a tinge of joy and optimism! How exciting the wait would be, how full-filling the end!

A list of things that remind me of (joyous) anticipation:

  • The slow brewing of the perfect cup of chai
  • The blooming of that one button rose in my home garden
  • The setting of twilight just after sunset on a summer day
  • The passing of monsoon clouds on a humid day
  • The waiter arriving with your favourite food
  • The perfect sync of your feet tapping to the beat drop of your favourite song
  • The impending notification of text from a specific person
  • The countdown of days before meeting my nani (every year!)
  • The review/ reaction of friends after you share your favourite song of the day with them
  • And many, many more!

  • That’s all for this newsletter, feel free to share a list of things that you anticipate but with joy!

And here I would like to end this newsletter with this new word:

    vorfreude

(n.) the joyful, intense anticipation that comes from imagining future pleasures

Until next time, hope you all smile more, love more and enjoy this gorgeous festive month of November!

I love monsoon and I think I have been suffering from Monsoon Withdrawal Symptoms!

As always, here’s a song that I have listening to every single day for a few weeks now – Something in the rain by Rachel Yamagata. There’s something absolutely melancholic and beautiful about this song! Enjoy!

Sending love, hugs and a warm comforting cup of chai always,

    Krupa
